Our history

Alides has a rich history. As part of the Ghent family business Group Maes, founded in 1892, we have a strong tradition in the construction and real estate sector. For five generations, the company was led by the Maes family. Today we continue this inspiring story with many major key moments in mind, but mostly with a lot of ambitious plans for the future.

1892

Petrus Maes starts the family activities as a contractor.

Over the years, the family activities are further expanded by the second generation Isidoor Maes and the third generation Gustaaf Maes. 

1965

NV R. Maes is founded by Roland and Roger Maes. The activities are relocated to Toemaattragel in Ghent.

1968

Bouw en Immobiliën Maes (BIM) is founded to hold, manage, and exploit the buildings developed by the contractor.

60's

Group Maes realises the building of hundreds of villas, houses and apartments, holding part of it in its portfolio.

70's

The operating range expands to Brussels, with a main focus on residential. The true success story is the build of 1,800 school pavilions all over Belgium.

Buildings works are kicked off for multiple office complexes, as well as the shopping mall Ring Shopping Center Kuurne.

80's

Schelde I is founded.

90's

Group Maes delivers bridge embellishments for the TGV in France, as well as the entrance arch of Euro Disney.

Group Maes purchases, together with the Delori family, 160 ha of industrial lands in Evergem and starts gradually with the commercialisation. The development of the multifunctional complex Gent Zuid strengthens the growth and diversity of the group.

In 1992, Group Maes celebrates its 100th anniversary with a festive event.

Group Maes purchases two buildings in the Wetstraat, rebuilding it to Copernicus.

2000

Schelde II is taken into use.

2003

The headquarters in Ghent get a total makeover.

2009

FIP merges with BIM: this marks the start of Alides

The serviced residence "Wonen op Poel and Ramen" is opened.

2010

The second Cascade Midi hotel is opened.

2012

Purchase of Zen-Park.

2014

Purchase of the strategically located office building RAC Ter Plaeten with 15,700 m2 of office space and 185 underground parking spaces, fully let to the Buildings Agency.

2015

Turnkey redevelopment project of prestigious offices on the Brussels Square de Meeûs, in the heart of the European Quarter.

 

2016

Opening of Quantum Building, a state-of-the-art sustainable office building near the Gent-Dampoort station.

Demolition works of the industrial site in Toemaattragel, as the start for a modern-day development with a mix of living and working.

2017

Alides and Revive purchase the former Imperial Shipyards in Gdańsk, Poland. The old shipyards will be redeveloped into a lively neighbourhood with a mix of different functions and a focus on a sustainable approach and high living standard.

On September 14th, Group Maes celebrates its 125th anniversary with a big event marking the next step towards growth, the renewed ambitions of Alides as a hybrid investor and developer ensure a strong growth of the activities and results.

Completion of the iconic Oxygen Building, in the heart of the European Quarter in Brussels.

2018

Alides purchases Espace Kennedy B in, Luxembourg, one of the most coveted buildings on the prime location Kirchberg. The property accounts for more than 5,835 m2 of office space and is situated near the Avenue John F. Kennedy, the main street connecting Kirchberg to the city centre of Luxembourg.

2019

On May 1st, Sophie Maes is succeeded by Rikkert Leeman as the CEO and chairman of the Executive Committee. Rikkert also becomes a member of the Executive Board of Alides REIM NV. As a non-executive director, Sophie remains actively involved in the further strategic expansion of Group Maes, together with two family directors and four independent directors.

Alides REIM Ltd announces the sale of the shares of Immo Spa NV, owner of Oxygen Office Building.

2020

Alides completes the purchase of the shares of Poppy Caesar NV, owner of Woluwe Gate, an office building at the beginning of the Woluwelaan in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe.

The building was renovated in 2012 and has 8,851 m2 of office space, 339 m2 of archive space and 123 parking spaces. 

Alides relocates its headquarters to a new state-of-the-art office building at Forum. In doing so, Alides shows that it is ready for an ambitious future as your partner in real estate.

Alides strengthens its position in Brussels with the purchase of the EFTA building in the European district. This building of 2,567 m² of office space in the rue Joseph II is a strategic acquisition that offers great potential for a smooth redevelopment.

Alides sells office building Espace Kennedy B in Luxembourg to a French pension fund managed by LaSalle Investment Management. This crown jewel was purchased by Alides in June 2018. After a thorough renovation, Alides succeeded in no time in leasing the office 100%, including to one of the most valuable companies in the world.

2021

The Copernicus building, a crown jewel of Alides in the Rue de la Loi in Brussels, will be rented to the European Commission for 20 years. The agreement on the Copernicus building is one of the most important real estate deals in the capital in 2021, laying the foundations for the further growth of Alides.

Alides further expands its Brussels development portfolio with 2 acquisitions in the Brussels area. On the one hand, Alides became the owner of the companies owning the office building "Science-Montoyer", also called Montoyer 34, located in the heart European district. 

On the other hand, the site located on the Tervurenlaan and the Hertogstraat in Brussels was purchased. The former headquarters of the Tiense Suikerraffinaderij has all the assets to become a successful new development, in line with Alides' strategy.

Alides acquires another strategic location in Gdansk, Poland. After the purchase of the Imperial Shipyard (Stocznia Cesarska) in 2017, now the unique Waterside office complex was also acquired.

2022

Alides acquires no less than four iconic buildings in Brussels: Gulledelle 100, Commerce 44, Gerling House and IT Tower. In addition, Alides Polska is making its first acquisition in Warsaw.

2023

Sven De Bondt will join the executive committee as Chief Operational Officer of Alides from 1 January 2023. With this, Alides strengthens and professionalises its management structure.
 

Alides acquired the office building located at Frankrijklei 121 in Antwerp. The purchase is fully in line with its expansion strategy in the office segment, which aims to give a sustainable future to obsolete buildings in prime locations.
 

Sport Flanders presented the Sports Company Awards for the first time on 8 May 2023. The award recognises companies committed to a sporting working environment. The jury selected Alides as one of the five winners.
